Speak, Record, Organize: Why I Paid $50 for This AI Notetaking App After Just 10 Minutes
Imagine there is an app that can jot down ideas in your mind into notes directly, will you use it? Sorry, we still cannot do that in 2024. But AI makes speaking into notes perfectly real moment now, and I paid USD 50 for a fantastic app’s lifetime subscription after using it for 10 mins, which is my first time to make such a quick decision. In what scenarios I use it
First of all, let’s unveil its straightforward name — Voicenotes, developed by the founder of buy me a coffee. Although the following scenarios might not match your needs, I still suggest you to have a read because the amazing features will only be exhibited separately in these parts. Let’s dive in!
S1: I used to dislike diarizing
Have you ever tried keeping a diary? I did and I failed in notebooks, DEVONthink, Notion, etc. Here is another time but I can see Voicenotes is making a difference.
From my previous experience, the most difficult part of diarizing every day or week is I need to sit down and try hard to recall my previous flashes, which consumes a lot of time. And of course, I also need to transform these memory into every single word in different grammatically correct sentences. Life is tough, huh?
However, with Voicenotes these vanished! Open Voicenotes, click “Record a note”, speak and voilà! Simple as that. The charm is Voicenotes can transcribe multi-languages in one record correctly and remove nonsense pauses and hmm. I’m really surprised by its accuracy even when I stay in a noisy environment or whisper to the app. And this is why I start my intermittent diary. Later, I tag #journal when I have time to review all my transcriptions, and ask my personal assistance to review my day or my week.
A surprise today is the feature of “Ask me something” asked if I found some new uses of Dazz app because I journalized it yesterday. With this feature, journalizing is becoming snow balls. Endless topics are coming after you.
S2: I used to reject fleeting thoughts
Intrinsically, there is no difference between intermittent diary and fleeting thoughts, or, let’s say, intermittent diaries are fleeting thoughts specially attached to my life. Because of how convenient to record notes in Voicenotes, I can record fleeting thoughts smoothly every now and then.
In order to discover more related notions of any notes, you can also go to the specific one and see its related notes from the past.
Although the accurate rate of transcriptions is pretty high, we can set up our preferred language in the setting to avoid the bias of accents. This setup, however, will cause failures if the whole record is in another language. Then I can use “Regenerate transcript” to try again or listen to the recording and write it down by myself, then use “Generate another title” which is based on the text notes. I must admit that this generating title saved my life if you are also struggled in thinking of note titles.
S3: I used to procrastinate blogging
Blogging is the advanced version of journalizing. A blog is never scratched from nothing but many thoughts and inspirations noted in the past days. From S1 and S2, we will have tons of materials and ingredients to be cooked. The most common way is to organize and rephrase these notes into a blog, but this is time consuming. Yet we are very lucky on the grounds that Voicenotes can create a blog based on multiple notes. If you are not happy about the preset prompt, you can also customize instructions.
In addition to creating blogs as the screenshot shown, it’s also seamless to create Summary, List main points, To-do list, Tweet, and Email. S4: I used to not take reading notes
Reading is interesting, but taking notes is somehow tiring. At the present, you can speak. More specific, during my reading of a book, I note inspirations down together with the original contexts by Voicenotes if I find something inspiring. What else can I do? The imperfections might stop you
As introduced, creating blogs is never so easy. I simply asked Voicenotes to make bullet points of the imperfections that might stop you. Here we are:
Bugs
- Mobile App Bugs with Tags: I encounter failures when attempting to add tags on mobile devices; tagging appears successful but does not reflect in the specified tag group.
- Low Volume in Playback: The playback volume for recorded audio is very low on the phone, making it impossible to listen to transcriptions.
- Language Issues with Simplified and Traditional Chinese: I set my preferred language to Chinese, but Voicenotes often generate content in Traditional Chinese on the phone while in Simplified Chinese on the web app.
- Specific Language Setting Issues: When a particular language setting is chosen, the software may inaccurately transcribe or misinterpret user commands, especially between English and Chinese languages.
- Issues with Real-Time Transcription Delay: If I leave Voicenotes right after I record, transcription fails. Fortunately I can regenerate the content on the web app, but only the web app not the iOS app.
Feature request regarding tags
- Inability to Filter Notes Without Tags: It would be better if we can easily filter notes that do not have any tags assigned.
- Batch Tagging and Tag Management: We cannot batch tag multiple notes and apply multiple tags at once, including renaming tags and having those changes reflect across all notes.
- Automatic Tagging Based on Specific Phrases: I believe Voicenotes can surpass mroe if it supports automatic tagging when certain keywords, like “note” or “diary,” are mentioned at the beginning. There are two ways, the automatic tags are generated fully from the blank or from the existing or preset tags.
Feature request regarding notes-taking
- Inspirational Source Linking: Voicenotes lacks the ability to link directly to another note. After I review a note, I might have new ideas but currently I cannot link them together. Additionally, Voicenotes is limited to recording but inspirations always come from our daily reading, so it would be better if we can link to external resources.
- Need for Manual Input: There is a demand for an option to manually enter notes, not just voice recordings, for situations where speaking is not feasible.
- Lack of Speaker Differentiation: Voicenotes does not distinguish between different speakers during transcription, complicating a scenario when we are having an inspiring speech.
Other feature request
- Inability to Import Recordings: Voicenotes does not support to import audio recordings for transcription.
- Data Loss and Sync Issues: Concerns over the permanent and secure storage of chat records, suggesting a need for real-time cloud synchronization to prevent data loss.
- AskMyAI Functionality Limitations: The ASKmyAI feature cannot respond in Chinese and struggles with data retention and AI illusion.
- Lack of Apple Watch App. I do not always stay with my phone but my Apple Watch.
- Lack of Notes Export. As instructed, Voicenotes is the first-citizen of my note-taking system, but I cannot write a blog in it because of its limited editor. Right now I can only copy and paste to Notion.
Bottom line
Do not be scared of the imperfections due to the fact that Voicenotes is in a very early stage. I deleted some concerns during writing this post because they are fixed and upgraded. I think the most valuable thing that Voicenotes bring to me is that I don’t have to worry about which folder/tag I should put my notes in or what to title my notes. I only need to record and sometimes add tags, and AI is going to find the note I need for me.
